We’re making it simpler and easier to send MWK through MotoMoney

Exciting changes are happening at MotoMoney. Here’s what you need to know about the new, streamlined way of sending money to Malawi from the UK and Europe through our website and app.

What’s changing?

From 15 August 2022, you will no longer need a MotoMoney account to send money to Malawi. Instead, you’ll be able to send payments directly from your local current account in the UK or an EEA country.

We’re rolling out an upgraded app where you can simply and securely transfer funds to recipients in Malawi, at the same great exchange rate, with no transaction fees and no extra steps required.

Whether you send a regular salary to family at home, make payments to a Malawian business, or pay for school fees, you’ll be able to send money to Malawi in just one click from your usual bank account.

Why are we changing MotoMoney?

We want to make it easier and quicker to send funds through MotoMoney.
We’re also looking to the future, with new MotoMoney products and services in the pipeline for business customers. Using the upgraded app, our money remittance services will be faster and more straightforward for all our customers, business and personal.

As well as streamlining personal transfers, the new app will make MotoMoney available to organisations that can benefit from our easy service and great exchange rates.

What do you need to do?

We’ll be closing all MotoMoney accounts as part of the changeover, so there are a few things you’ll need to do in preparation.

Withdraw any money you have in your MotoMoney current account before the changeover happens on 15 August 2022.

Update any Direct Debits and standing orders that are due to come out of your MotoMoney account after 15 August 2022 – things like gym memberships, tax instalments or streaming subscriptions.

Update any saved card payment details on apps or online shopping websites where you use your MotoMoney MasterCard debit card, since your card will stop working after 15 August 2022.
We’ll make sure you have plenty of notice so you can do this at your convenience, and we’ll be here to take you through the process step by step.

You’ll hear from us 60 days before your account closes to give you plenty of time to sort everything out. And if you have questions, you can always contact us on support@motomoney.com or via the live chat on the MotoMoney app.

You spoke, we listened

When we started MotoMoney in 2021, the money remittance services Malawi citizens could access were quite expensive. We wanted to roll out a better solution using existing technology.

Since then, our customers have told us that they love our reliability, the low exchange rates we offer and the knowledge that their money is safe with us.
But for some users, the need for a separate MotoMoney account was inconvenient.

If you already have a current account with another bank, why not make payments directly from there, instead of logging in to a different account to send money home?

Customers also told us that they want to make payments to a wider range of people and places, which isn’t currently possible with our accounts. We’re using a new standard of financial technology called Open Banking to make more options available to our users.

What is Open Banking?

Open Banking is a new way of connecting banks, technical providers and trusted businesses. It was designed to give customers more clarity, control and convenience, while helping banks and technology providers to grow and innovate faster.

Open Banking allows you to connect your finances securely to the people and organisations you want to give access to, so you get a more personalised experience and spend less time manually managing your money.

What else is changing?

All the MotoMoney features you know and love are staying the same for the moment – it’s only the way payments are sent that’s changing. Of course, we’ll always keep you updated about any future changes and improvements.

Using the upgraded MotoMoney app or new website, you’ll still be able to take advantage of some of the best money remittance services in Africa and Europe, with benefits like:
